Vehicle Fitness Pre-Inspection Checklist: Brakes, Lights, Tyres, Emissions and Documents to Check First

A vehicle fails a fitness inspection for predictable reasons, and almost all of them can be found and fixed in your own driveway beforehand. Working through this checklist the day before your appointment is the cheapest way to pass first time, keep the vehicle earning, and avoid the cost and delay of a re-inspection.

Brakes, steering and suspension

Brakes are the single most common reason for refusal. On level ground, press the pedal: it should feel firm, not spongy, and should not sink towards the floor under steady pressure. On a safe empty stretch, brake firmly from a low speed — the vehicle should stop in a straight line without pulling to one side. Any grinding, shuddering through the pedal, or a handbrake that will not hold the vehicle on a gentle slope needs attention before the inspection.

• Check brake fluid level and look for dampness at wheel and pipe connections.
• Turn the steering wheel with the engine running: excessive free play before the wheels respond is a defect.
• Push down hard on each corner of the vehicle; it should settle once, not bounce repeatedly.
• Listen for knocking from the suspension over a rough surface.

Lights and electricals

Lamps are quick to check and quick to fail. Have someone operate the controls while you walk around the vehicle, or use reflections from a wall.

• Headlights on both dipped and main beam, with both sides working and roughly aligned.
• Brake lights, including a high-level stop lamp where fitted.
• Indicators front and rear, plus side repeaters, flashing at a normal rate.
• Reverse lights, number plate light and rear fog lamp where fitted.
• Horn, wipers, washer jets and the hazard switch.

Tyres, glass and mirrors

Check every tyre including the spare. Look for tread worn close to the wear indicators, cuts or bulges in the sidewall, uneven wear that points to alignment or suspension problems, and mismatched sizes on the same axle. Check the wheel nuts are present and tight.

For glass, look for damage in the driver's line of sight, heavy tint that blocks vision from outside, and any sharp damage at the edges of the windscreen. Mirrors must be present, securely mounted and intact, covering both sides and the rear.

Emissions, exhaust and body condition

With the engine warm and idling, stand behind the vehicle and watch the exhaust. Visible smoke under acceleration — blue, black or white — is a defect and is treated seriously, particularly for diesel commercial vehicles. An exhaust that hangs loose, rattles or has an obvious hole will be noted.

Then walk the body. Look for sharp damaged panels, doors that do not latch properly, a bonnet or tailgate that will not stay open, corrosion in structural areas, and fluid puddles under the vehicle after it has been parked. On commercial vehicles, check load body condition, tie-down points, and passenger fittings such as grab rails and emergency exits.

Documents and the final walk-around

Mechanical condition is only half the inspection. Carry the original registration book or smart card, your CNIC, the previous fitness certificate, the current token tax receipt, insurance details where required, your route permit for commercial vehicles, and the inspection booking reference with its fee receipt.

Finish with a slow walk around the vehicle in daylight, checking anything you have not already covered, then confirm that your documents are in the glove box and your appointment time is correct.
